Los Angeles Ranks Among Deadliest Cities for Pedestrians – What Can Be Done?

Los Angeles is facing a growing pedestrian safety crisis. Between 2011 and 2020, the city recorded 1,133 pedestrian fatalities, making it the second deadliest city in the nation for pedestrians—only behind New York City, which saw 1,260 deaths during the same period. Despite efforts like Vision Zero, which aimed to eliminate traffic fatalities, pedestrian deaths have continued to rise, highlighting a major public safety concern.

Why Are Pedestrian Fatalities Increasing?

Several factors contribute to the growing number of pedestrian deaths in Los Angeles. South Los Angeles alone accounts for nearly half of all traffic injuries and fatalities, disproportionately affecting low-income communities and people of color. According to city officials, children and seniors also face a significantly higher risk of being involved in pedestrian accidents.

While the city has implemented more than 6,000 new crosswalks, signals, and other safety measures over the past five years, these efforts have not been enough to reverse the alarming trend. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that pedestrian fatalities nationwide have surged by 65% since 2011, with 7,342 deaths reported in 2021—the highest number in four decades.

The Legal Side: Holding Negligent Parties Accountable

Pedestrian accidents are often caused by reckless or negligent driving, including speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield at crosswalks. In some cases, poorly designed roads and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure contribute to the dangers pedestrians face daily. Victims of pedestrian accidents and their families should not have to suffer the consequences alone.

At Pacific Coast Injury Law Center, we are committed to fighting for those who have been injured or lost loved ones due to pedestrian accidents. Negligent drivers, city officials, and policymakers must be held accountable for failing to ensure pedestrian safety. If you or someone you know has been injured in a pedestrian accident, you have the right to seek justice and fair compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering.
